Sierra Leone’s government is ready to host Russian fishing fleet
This initiative was discussed during the first session of the Russian-Sierra Leone Fisheries Commission, which took place in Freetown, Sierra Leone’s capital.
Rosrybolovstvo stated that Sierra Leone is interested in attracting up to 20 Russian vessels to operate within its exclusive economic zone.
Earlier, marine biologists from both countries jointly conducted research to evaluate the biomass and distribution of small pelagic fish species, as part of the Great African Expedition initiated by Rosrybolovstvo last August.
Following the processing of this research and assessment of fishing companies’ interest in specific fish stocks and marine resources, detailed negotiations on fishing operations in Sierra Leonean waters are expected to begin.
Additionally, Sierra Leone seeks further cooperation with Russia in areas including port development, fleet modernization, as well as investment in coastal refrigeration and monitoring systems.
Russia’s involvement in Africa has grown substantially in recent years, with multiple countries pursuing joint ventures with Moscow in defense, energy, education, and trade sectors. The Kremlin has identified deepening ties with Africa as a key foreign policy priority.
Earlier this year, a spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed plans to open new embassies in several African nations, including Sierra Leone. Currently, Russia’s main diplomatic presence in the country is through its Consulate General in Freetown.
