Chelsea Secures Victory Over Benfica, Advances to Club WC Quarters

(MENAFN) Chelsea secured a commanding 4-1 victory over Benfica on Sunday, punching their ticket to the quarterfinals of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup after a dramatic clash that extended into extra time.

The high-stakes match unfolded at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, where both sides remained scoreless through the first half. Chelsea broke the deadlock in the 64th minute with a goal from Reece James.

Severe weather disrupted the match in the 85th minute when a lightning storm forced a nearly two-hour suspension.

After play resumed, Benfica drew level in stoppage time as Ángel Di María converted a penalty in the 90+5th minute, pushing the match into extra time.

Just minutes into extra time, Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni was shown a red card, reducing the Portuguese side to 10 men.

Capitalizing on the numerical advantage, Chelsea launched a relentless offensive. Christopher Nkunku scored in the 108th minute, followed by Pedro Neto in the 114th and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in the 117th, sealing a dominant finish for the Blues.

Chelsea now prepares to face Brazilian club Palmeiras in the upcoming quarterfinal matchup.
